Polystyrene Foam Panels: Green Yesterday, Not Today

Rigid insulating foam panels have been used for many years to sheath and insulate homes both above and below grade but the cover article in this month’s Environmental Building News (EBN) titled “Polystyrene Insulation – Does It Belong in a Green Building” may squelch use and cause manufacturers to do some reformulating.  The problem according to the article is the bromated flame retardant HBCD that’s added to the foam.  EBN provides an accounting of the issues and offers substitute material ideas.
